What is the Student Judicial Board? The Student Judicial Board or JBoard is a student group currently comprised of 10 residential students who gather once a week to review student judicial conduct cases. After completing training on topics such as housing policies, decision making, and communication skills, the students will be assigned cases from the Housing department’s Judicial Affairs and Staffing Coordinator. During each weekly meeting, the students involved in the cases present their information regarding what policies were broken and why. The JBoard then has the opportunity to ask the students involved further questions, and then deliberate and decide an appropriate judicial sanction for the students who are involved. The goal of the student judicial board is to educate residents, through judicial hearings, to help build and strengthen our living communities. We are not here to serve punishments. What is the expected time commitment to be on the Student Judicial Board? There is a minimal time commitment when on the JBoard. You are required to submit an application, attend a personal interview with the group’s advisor, attend a couple of training sessions over evenings or a weekend, and then be available for a couple of hours each week to hear cases on designated afternoons or evenings as arranged around the board member’s schedules. What are the requirements for membership? You must be an enrolled San Jose State University student living in the residence halls with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above. You must be in good judicial standing with the University Housing Services and the university. You must be able to attend all the Student Judicial Board training sessions and have a couple free hours each week to hear cases. What do I get out of being on the Student Judicial Board? There is a great opportunity to learn more about due process procedures while gaining judicial and leadership experience. You will also improve your critical thinking, communication and teamwork skills. Not to mention, you will have the satisfaction of being a student leader and being involved in your residential community. What happens if you are called before the Student Judicial Board? -What is it like/what happens? Each resident that comes before the JBoard will have their rights and the UHS Judiciall Processed explained to them. Each resident will aslo have time to see and read the incident report documenting their incident, and will then be given a chance to give their side of the story. Once the student explains his/her story, the JBoard then asks further questions to clarify what happened. Then the resident will leave, the JBoard will deliberate and come up with a Judicial Sanction, the resident will later recieve a follow-up letter with the JBoard’s decision. -What if I need to reschedule? Call the phone number listed at the bottom of your letter informing you of your hearing in order to arrange a new hearing time. -What if have more questions? Call the phone number listed at the bottom of your letter to discuss your questions with a Judicial Board represenative.
